São Jorge Castle is one of the most emblematic monuments of the Portuguese capital. Its privileged location offers stunning panoramic views of the city, the Tagus River and the surrounding hills. The castle is then a living testimony of Lisbon’s glorious past and plays a key role in Portugal’s history.

The beginning

It was on the 25th of October 1147 that the Christian military contingent led by D. Afonso Henriques, after a siege of approximately four months, entered the city and hoisted the standard of Christianity.

Over the centuries, the São Jorge Castle has witnessed important events and conquests. That is, during the Middle Ages, inserted in what was once the noble zone, it served as a royal residence, stage for parties and some ceremonies.

At the time of the Age of Discovery, the castle played a strategic role in planning the maritime expeditions that put Portugal on the world map. Finally, during the Peninsular War, in the 19th century, the castle served as headquarters for British and Portuguese troops, resisting the attacks of Napoleonic forces.
